Applying Marxism : capital

1) What does Marxism suggest regarding power in society?

Marxists view that a minute minority's known as the "elite" who have money and power , have better lives in society rather than "normal" working class society.
2) Why is The Apprentice a good example of the media reinforcing capitalist values and ideologies?

The apprentice is a show based on business amd success so it has obvious capitalist ideologies embedded in it .The reach for success and hard work is constantly emphasised with each team in the programme which reflects the capitalist ideology of an individual's hard work should result in that individuals success.

3) Come up with three examples of media texts (e.g. TV programmes, newspapers etc.) that either fetishise working class life (e.g. EastEnders presents quite a harmonious East End community which probably doesn't accurately reflect East London life) or demonise working class life or poor people (e.g. The Daily Mail and The Sun newspapers regularly demonise people living on benefits with headlines referring to 'scroungers'.)

-eastenders
-the daily express
- the sun

4) Think about the setting, characters and narrative strands - how many of the bullet points apply to Capital? Does Capital reinforce or challenge the values of capitalism? Give examples from episode 1 to support your points.

Though capital is a political drama it has balanced ideological undertones in which there are both elements of socialism and capitalism. the auidience easily sees capitalist views with the yount family, specifically roger yount, who is a banker and introduces the banking industry into Capital.Obviously, as a banker roger and the other bankers in the show will have strong capitalist views in which they believe there hard work must be shined on and rewarded in the best way possible, this is evident when roger , who overestimates his bonus, exclaims"what use is 30 grand?" Which signifies his dissatisfaction in the amount of money his is given which is quite a significant amount , but due to the capitalist mindset roger possesses he sees this amount insulting.on the other hand there are characters that represents left wing / socialist views. Some being the kamal family and quentina. The kamal family are a brown family that own a corner shop who also balance a close family relationship. The kamal family represent socialist views as we see them caring for the elderly and giving arabella a free item from their shop as she seemed rather distressed. We also see quentina who is black immigrant working illegally in th uk on the verge of deportation who , like the kamal family, has a positive light shine on her as she is also seen as hard working, honest and a good person is society but is heavily exploited and shown no mercy by the uk government(the letter) which makes the auidience sympathise with her.overall, I think capital leans more towards left wing ideologies as the wealthier characters are less sympathised for than the working class ones which could be a comment on Marxist ideology.
