TV: Exam question

“Realism is a vital component of television drama”. To what extent does an analysis of your television close-study products support this view? [25 marks]

Realism is on of the most vital components of television drama as if television dramas don’t reflect elements of reality , audiences would find it difficult to relate to characters and have gratifications like personal relationships with characters in certain circumstances. They also help the success of a tv drama as audiences are able to relate and therefore enjoy the show a lot more and keep on watching it .

In the example of the television drama “Capital” reflect a mass amount of modern London society in its episodes. The use of a diverse cast with the kamal family and Quentina emphasise that London isn’t just a city with one race and that over the years it has diversified and it also allows audiences to build personal relationships ,so  for captital being a “State of the nation” its vital for the producers to include aspects like these to effectively create a successful drama about modern society in an economic crisis.Deutschland 83 , being a period drama also used realism in its production to help audiences feel as if they were living in 1980’s Germany during the Cold War, though some aspects of the show are purely for fictional purposes other aspects like setting, realistic characters and personality and real archive footage help build a strong realistic narrative. The two BBQ scenes in west and east Germany are key scenes in representing the the different realities in the two divided areas of Germany , with the west having more colour , westernised music and bigger gardens with bigger houses.Where as the east of Germany has a more gritty , working class and “poor” lifestyle with not many luxuries specifically German music and dull colour. These two representations offer audiences survellience into how people on each side of Germany lived , though aspects may be exaggerated for drama purposes the main message of reality is conveyed effectively.

Furthermore in Deutschland 83, especially in the key supermarket scene in west Germany , the audiences can see the clear contrast between the two locations. The use of bricolage:juxtaposing of two media texts and the pastiche of Andy Warhol’s pop art is a way for the producers to understand the reality Martin/Moritz is now living. You could however argue that eventhough realism is a component of TV drama it isn’t the most vital. Aspects such as an enticing narrative , a unique approach to certain depictions of situations whether it be through cinematography or editing etc.. do have a large amount of significance in creating a successful TV drama.

In conclusion I agree,to an extent, that realism is a vital component in Tv dramas as they allow many audience gratifications such as personal relationships, personal identity and surveillance which can contribute to the success rate of a show. Also , they help auidineces understand character situations if the situations reflects a somewhat real situation in real time making the show more enjoyable and engaging.
