Film regulation and the BBFC - blog tasks:

1) Research the BBFC in more detail: what is the institution responsible for? How is it funded? What link does it have to government?

This institution is responsible for the national classification and censorship of films exhibited, in the UK, at cinemas and video works (such as television programmes, trailers, ...

It is funded through charged fees . This means film distributors have always paid a fee to have their works rated. The BBFC is a not for profit organisation.
2) Read this BBFC guide to how films are rated. Summarise the process in 50 words.

The bbfc have compliance officers who watch all films and online content in the bbfc's home cinema to get the "home" feel. Compliance Officers reports include a brief synopsis of the work, details of the issues, and an argument in support of the recommended age rating. Which leads into checking if the film contains violence ,sex, drug references etc... The rating is then chosen after
It has been checked in detail and the compliance officers are happy with it.

3) Read this BBFC outline of the issues faced when classifying a film. Summarise the debate in 50 words.

The issues when classifying film include if the content clashes with the law or has been made with association to criminal offences.ALso if the film contains any content that is considered harmful for the age rating it's targeted at and if it creates "moral harm". Another issue is if the bad language can offend any members of the age rated viewers . Sex and violence etc... Is hugely debated with how far it's considered acceptable in the film. Lastly if the film contains any dark or disturbing concepts that would make viewers uncomfortable

4) Read this BBFC section on controversial decisions. Why did The Dark Knight generate a large amount of media coverage regarding its certificate? Do you agree with the 12A certificate The Dark Knight was awarded?

The BBFC received a lot of backlash after the rating of 12A was given to the film The Dark Knight due to the amount of violence the film contained , the viewers complained saying the violence was too strong for the rating and needs to be changed. In my opinion , I think the rating is acceptable for the film because if the child aged 12 is supervised with an adult the should be no issue as the adult has the control on if they want to change the film or switch it off completely also being 12 years old means the child is as the brink of their teenager years which means the violence shouldn't be too much for the child to handle as the child is growing up and should be able to sit through the film without and "harm".

5) What are the guidelines for a 15 certificate?

The guideLines for a 15 film include:

  • Dangerous behaviour - behaviour that includes self harm , suicide  etc.. Should not dwell indetail and should not be easy to imitate
  • Discrimination- though themes including racism , homophobia etc..may be used in vague manners the film shouldn't endorse intense discrimination
  • Drugs- the use of drugs may be shown but it should not show misuse and exploitation of drug use and it shouldn't promote it
  • Language - strong language and very strong language may be permitted depending on the context of the film
  • Sex- sexual activity may be shown just not in immense detail. Strong verbal sexual references may be permitted
  • Nudity- sexual or non sexual , there is no constraint on how much nudity is permitted in the film
  • Sexual violence and sexual threat - references to strong sexual violence or threat may be permitted but any depiction of rape or assault is not permitted
  • Threat and horror - there may be strong threat and horror references but any form of sustained sadisism will be seen as unacceptable
Violence - violence may be shown but should not dwell in infliction of pain and injury

6) The BBFC website offers an explanation of every classification it makes and detailed case studies on selected titles. Look at the rating for Chicken and explain why it was given a 15 certificate.

The film contains strong violence, sex and language which fits under the criteria of a 15 rated film.
