Film Industry: British film industry factsheets

1) Write a one-sentence definition of what makes a film British.

It can be difficult to determine if a film is British but the main criteria to determine it can be: whether or not the film is made in Britain then it can be decided if its a British film also it could be determined  by finding out if the film is  funded from within Britain, if the cast are  British, or whether or not the film’s subject matter about Britain or British culture.

2) What is the difference between a Hollywood production context and production context of a British film?

Hollywood production context means that most films made by Hollywood studios
have high budgets, a heavy reliance on celebrities both in the cast and crew and spectacle driven stories. Whereas, the British production context doesn't have very clearly defined characteristics, but  what could be considered to be recurring characteristics of the British film production context are that films made within the British production context will in some way reflect British culture

3) When did the James Bond franchise start?

The James Bond franchise started in the 1960's with the first film being Dr.No

4) In terms of film censorship and graphic content, what began to change in British film in the 1970s and 1980s?
In the 1970s the British film industry was dominated by the subject of censorship that continued into the video nasties banning of the 1980s. The 1980s also saw a decline in American investment in British film that did not increase again until the 1990s. In terms of graphic content  the 1970's saw a rise in British Films of sexual content, both the act of sex and sex linked to violence with films that received alot of backlash. The 1980 saw the rise of videos videos and the ‘video nasty’s scare where filmmaking was becoming more accessible and more extreme content was being created and making it to britain. the country now receives classifications to have one of 7(possibly 8 although the R18 certificate is rarely used) classifications awarded to it.

6) What does the Factsheet suggest might be the audience appeal of British film?

the use of well known British actors, British culture and the overall "relatebleness" audience can receive from watching a British film

if the film includes the four cultural topics : context,social contribution , location and crew  and if it scores 16/31 it can then be classified as British

5) What are the two options for the future of the British film industry? In your opinion, which of these two options would best safeguard the future of the British film industry?

the fact sheet suggests that either British films productions rely on co productions with american studios or make really low budget films at a niche audience. I personally think that low budget films are the best option for British film because though they may not get as much attentions s big budget american film or co-produced american films  they will still hold the traditional British charm that a British film obviously needs.
