Lighting: still image analysis

Look at the still images on slides 33-37 of the Film Language Powerpoint linked above. Copy the images into your blog and answer the following questions for each image:
Identify examples of high and low-key lighting.
Say which depict top, back or under lighting.
What effects are created by the lighting in each image?

this image is a good example of low key lighting as its creating dramatic shadows on the subject such as the contours on the face which are darker compared to the high points (nose , forehead) . This is a clear example of underlighting  as the light is coming from under the subject to create a distorted effect on the face. This means this picture is from a horror film as many horror and sci fi films use this so dramatic effect. This creates a mysterious and eerie effect as the audience cant see much of the subject except for the high points on their face making them disappear into the shadows and have a darker scary look.

this image is an example  of high key lighting as the image looks quite realistic and the background looks as if the subject is outside and the high key lighting emphahsises that its a sunny day as its bright and strong. This image uses Top lighting to accentuate the features of the subject, however no filler light is being used as there is some shadow around the eyes and neck area of the subject. The light may be coming from above to create those shadows. As said before, the lights create a sense a realism but it also creates a sense of importance for the subject and suggests that he is an important character.

This image uses high key lighting coming from above the subject . This is because there is still shadow under the subjects face which means there is probably no filler light present. This is a good example of top lighting as accentuates the facial features of the subject. This makes the image seem realistic and happening in normal time as its as if their natural light from the sun hitting the subject .

This image from sin city uses low key lighting effectively to accentuate features on the subjects body such as the gun , coat and some features on his face. However , the lighting is an example of top lighting coming from the right side of the image so the left side of the subjects body is is darkness apart from some areas on the face where some filler light is being used. This creates a clear  strong , powerful and mysterious effect.

this image uses high key lighting and is an example of top lighting which is coming from the left side of the subject. However there is filler light present and is angled specifically at the subjects right elbow which therefore creates a strip of shadow at the center of the subjects body which creates an unusual look and possible ominous tones.

this is a clear use of Backlighting as its creating four deliberate silhouettes and exaggerated shadows. This also makes it low key lighting as there is a clear contrast of light and drake in the image . The light makes the characters look extremely dangerous and powerful. this is because we cant see their faces or what they look like so its makes it seems eerie and dangerous for the audience.

this image from a horror movie uses low key lighting to create a scary, mysterious and eerie effect because it has very minimal light, and the light that is present is coming from an opening of some sort on the set. The lighting focuses on the subject, who is a villain , and shows very little of the stature but shows the weapon and half the face which shows the power of the villain and the danger of him too. This image uses top lighting that comes from the right with no filler light.

This image is an example of high key lighting as its a realistic shot with natural shadows created with filler light .The image has top lighting coming from the middle where the camera probably is , i can tell this because of the image created of the subjects on the wall. This creates the glamorized  Hollywood and romantic look as the lighting is focused on the subjects fully with as little shadow as possible.

This image uses high key lighting which is coming through the blinds on the set to act as normal natural sunlight. this creates a realistic shot for the audience. Also, this shot also uses top lighting coming directly from the center where the camera is to focus on the subjects and make them seem more glamorous.
this image uses low key lighting and top lighting coming from the left to show clear contrast between the subject and shadow. it makes the subject more prominent and makes them look more effective when creating a scary and ominous atmosphere.
