Tv capital : Marxism and hegemony

Mail Online review of Capital

1) Re-read the Mail Online review of Capital. Why does it suggest that Capital features a left-wing ideology?

The review suggests that capital promotes left wing ideologies through the representations of black immigrants, the elderly and immigrants.

2) Choose three quotes from the review that are particularly critical of Capital and paste them into your blogpost. Do you agree with the criticisms? Why?

  • "The last 20 minutes contained no plot"- I somewhat agree with this critiscm  as the show does tend to go off on slight tangents and doesn't focus on the main issue on the postcards as much as it should
  • "The crusading lawyer (a woman, of course)"- I don't agree with this criticism as it has undertones of sexism as it suggests that the show was simply being politically correct in hiring a woman actress as a lawyer to promote diversity
  • "Everything British came in for a dose of loathing"-I also don't agree with the this critiscm as It suggests that everything that represented Britain in the show was "loathsome" which can seem discriminatory as immigration, racial inequality etc.. Was represented

3) What scenes or characters from Capital could be read as promoting left-wing ideology?

The characters of the kamal family and quentina can be seen as promoting left wing ideologies as they both represented a sense of a need or success of equality which is a strong left wing ideology.

4) What about the other side of the argument - are there any aspects of Capital that reinforce the status quo in capitalist London?

The yount family represent heavy capitalist ideologies as they see working hard as a sense of a need for reward as proven by roger when he is displeased with his thirty grand bonus "what use is thirty grand?"

1) Why did the Daily Mail suggest The Casual Vacancy promoted a left-wing ideology?

They promoted a left wing ideology by insulting the wealthier residents who were swallowed in the idea of money and power and wealth.

2) How does the article suggest characters, narrative and setting are used to promote a left-wing ideology?

The Article suggests that the characters who were seen as wealthier were ridiculed where as the characters were weren't as wealthy were put in a positive light and were sympathised.
3) What research is quoted regarding BBC bias and what did it find? Do you think the BBC is biased?

-the headline reading "is the bbc to close with jk Rowling?"

-I don't think the bbc try to be bias but sometimes they do fall into the trap of picking between left and right wing ideologies.

4) Gramsci's theory of hegemony suggests people are kept under control through active consent - the control of common sense'. How could you apply the Daily Mail or the BBC to the idea of hegemony and dominant ideologies in the UK media?

Gramsci theory :the dominance of one social class over others – i.e. how the ruling class or elite maintain control. The daily mail pushes strong political messages that are used to influence and persuade the readers into thinking into those ideologies but the BBC attempt to refrain from such dominance In their content. Instead they provide balanced content that provides both right and left wing ideologies and let's the audiences decided which wing to reside with
